Kwara to Host Maiden RATTAWU National Festival

The Kwara State Chapter of the Radio and Television Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) is to host the maiden national edition of Radio and Television Theatre Arts Festival (RATTAFEST).

The theme of the Fest is "RATTAWU @ 40: Media and culture sectors as tools for national transformation, cohesion and good governance".

Comrade Kabala Mohammd, the National Vice President, RATTAWU,  disclosed this when he led his team on a courtesy call on the Senior Special Assistant, Media and Communication to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Dr Muyideen Akorede in his office on Monday.

He added that the union decided to hold its festival in Kwara because it's peaceful and security is guaranteed. He solicited for the state governments' support towards the successful hosting of the festival saying, over 23 states have indicated interest and 84 national leaders of the union will be at the Fest.

On the recent strike by workers of Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kwara), Mohammd apologized to the state government on behalf of the workers, saying they didn’t follow the proper procedure for industrial action. He added the strike action wasn't the best way to express their concerns and urged them to embrace dialogue going forward. Also, he appealed to the state government to ensure that the concerns raised by the workers are addressed in no time.

However, the VP commended the State government on its stride in repositioning the 3 State-owned media houses to be among the best in North Central. He urged the state government not to relent on its oars until the media houses are fully repositioned to be self sustaining.

Responding, the SSA Media noted that the concerns of the workers have been heard and the Governor Ahmed-led administration is working of its commitment to complete the ongoing repositioning of the media houses to improve their efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery, make them self-sustaining as well as increase their revenue generation capacity before the expiration of its tenure in 2019.

He, however said in view of the current economic challenges, the government has priotized payment of salaries as first line charge followed by operational expenses of parastatals in the state.

Akorede disclosed that Kwara TV’s repositioning has been completed following the full digitization of the station as witnessed in its clarity of signals, improved programming and building overhaul.

On Midland FM, he said the station now boasts of digital live and recording equipment while awaiting the delivery of a brand new 10 kilowatt transmitter and a digital studio console for the AM station from Europe at the end of the month. He added that Radio Kwara has a 32-track Behringer recording console, an audio processor and other equipment necessary for its operation.

He said  for the Herald Newspaper, the ongoing construction of a new building and well as its furnishing will soon be completed.

Therefore, he assured the team of the State government support towards a successful RATTAFEST. He congratulated the state chapter of RATTAWU for being the host of the maiden national RATTAFEST and expressed optimism that they would win most of the awards at the festival.
