Kwara: 1000 AFAN members benefit from CBN Anchor Borrowers Program

Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, (AFAN), Kwara State branch, Mr. Ajibola Tajudeen has said 1000 members of the association have so far benefited from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) in the State, apart from other groups that have so far accessed the credit scheme.

Tajudeen, who made this known while featuring on a radio programme in Ilorin on Tuesday, noted that it was untrue that only politicians benefit from the scheme, which is facilitated by CBN and the State government.

He disclosed that selection of beneficiaries was transparent and cut across the 16 local government areas of Kwara, adding that several local farmers in different parts of the State, who are not members of AFAN have also benefited from the ABP.

The AFAN chairman stated that the beneficiary farmers engage in the production of rice, maize, soya beans and cassava, and all received loans under the programme, which was in form of farm inputs depending on the size of their farms.

He, however, said that the inability of some farmers to pay 5 per cent equity, which is part of the requirements that must be met, has hindered them from participating in the programme.

Tajudeen further said members of AFAN have received various supports from the State government over the years and urged the government to keep supporting them. He also called on the government to expand the ABP to allow more farmers in the State benefit from the scheme.

The Anchor Borrowers Programme was initiated by the Federal Government through the CBN as an agricultural intervention to help farmers boost their production.

The Kwara State government secured a N1billion loan from the CBN under the scheme to local farmers engaged in rice, maize, soya beans and cassava production in the state.
