ThTransfer Of Kwara Cultists To Abuja: Dirty Politics At Play - Mike Ozekhome SAN

A renowned lawyer and civil rights activist, Mr Mike Ozekhome SAN has described the transfer of suspected Kwara cultists, whose statements have earlier been taken by Kwara Police Command, to Abuja on the instruction of IGP, Ibrahim Idris, as dirty politics.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN, made this objective comment during a telephone interview with Punch newspaper last night when he opined that the investigation and prosecution of the case should be done in Kwara State, adding that what he saw playing out in the matter was best described as “very dirty politics.”

He said, “The suspects were arrested for an offence allegedly committed in Kwara State, made their statements in this State; and the statements made had been taken by the police and the court registry. All these were said to have been proffered first information referral to the Director of Public Prosecutions for necessary legal advice.

“It is within the purview of the DPP of the State to give the legal advice as to whether or not there is a prima facie case established against the alleged cult members, such as to warrant them to be put in the dock for trial. This is a state offence and under the constitution, there are 36 states in Nigeria with a Federal Capital Territory.”

Ozekhome, responding to the police press release said the story is more plausible that the suspects were “merely” being taken from Ilorin to Abuja for the purpose of possibly torturing them to alter their statements, “which are already in the public domain anyway, for the purpose of implicating some people.”

“I’m greatly disturbed by the direction of this country, and as we move towards 2019", he noted.

However, earlier, many youth groups from Kwara state took to the streets of Ilorin in protest against the Police's decision with strong opinion that the action of IGP was to frame up Sen. Saraki, who doesn't win elections in Kwara with the aid of thuggery but pure love from Kwarans, as a reaction over the Senate's resolution in declaring him unfit for public offices in Nigeria owing to his deliberate shunning of Senate's summons on security states of the nation.
